There are certain conditions under which it is good to sacrifice a bishop for the rook pawn in front of the opponent's castled king - usually it happens early in the game if the king doesn't have too much piece protection - this sacrifice is so common it is often called the stock sacrifice. In the miniature presented here, I found myself in just such a situation against young Vinay Bhat at the Sacramento Open of 1994. Unfortunately for me, my follow-up to the sac was not correct and I had to resign after just 16 moves. Since then, Vinay went on to become the youngest player to become a chess master at the age of 10 years old. |
