Final ExamDecember 17
11:30am-2:00pm
Pre-requisites: Math 10023 or two years of high school algebra.
Text: Algebra and Trigonometry (7th edition) by Larson and Hostetler (Houghton Mifflin, 2007).
Calculator: TI-83s and TI-86s are fine, but no calculators with symbolic manipulation can be used on the exams (such as the TI-89 or TI-92).
Course Goals: My goal is to prepare the student for the calculus sequence: The material in this course is often the main obstacle to students doing well in calculus. It includes basic algebra, dealing with equations and inequalities, functions and graphs, asymptotes, the exponential and logarithmic functions and the trigonometric functions.
Topics: Algebra, equations, inequalities, graphs, functions, polynomials and their roots, rational functions, exponential and logarithm functions, trig functions and trig identities.
Grades: Grades will be based on Homework/Quizzes (20%), three Exams (15% each - tentative dates are listed above) and the Final Exam (35%). I will regularly assign homework and encourage you to work on it and discuss it with your classmates, but you should not show other students your actual written work (this can lead to mindless copying). The quizzes will take place with great frequency and may not be made up without an official university excuse. Please bring your calculators for the Exams. Makeup exams are only possible for students with an official absence, in which case the student must inform me before the exam.
Course Website: I will maintain this website for our course; it will contain homework assignments (possibly solutions), and other useful information. The address is http://faculty.tcu.edu/snollet/courses/precalc.html.
Students with Disabilities: If you are eligible for academic adjustments, you see the Coordinator for Students with Disabilities (Marsha Ramsey, Ph.D. She can be found at Sadler Hall 11, phone extension 7486) and find out how to proceed. This should be done as soon as possible. Without a letter from her office, I can make no special allowances.
